Last weekend we decided to take a road trip down the coast of Greece, from Megara to the Gulf of Corinth. The weather was perfect and the views were stunning โ€“ it was a great way to spend a few days! We started in Megara, where we drove south along the coastline. There are so many beautiful beaches and towns to see on this route โ€“ we definitely recommend it if you’re looking for an enjoyable coastal drive.

What to see

There are plenty of things to see on a coastal road trip from Megara to the Gulf of Corinth. The first stop is the Temple of Poseidon in Sounion. This temple, which was built in 440 BC, is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. Next, head to the town of Loutraki, where you can relax at one of the many thermal springs. Then, continue on to Epidaurus, home to the famous ancient Greek theater. Finally, make your way to Nauplion, the capital of Argolis and one of the most beautiful towns in Greece.

What to do

There’s plenty to do in Megara, from visiting the ancient ruins to exploring the natural beauty of the area. For those interested in history, the archaeological site of Megara Hyblaea is a must-see. The site includes the remains of an ancient Greek city, including a temple dedicated to the goddess Hera. Nature lovers will enjoy hiking or cycling through the lush landscapes of Mount Geraneia or taking a swim in one of the many crystal-clear beaches along Megara Gulf.

How to get there

The Megara Gulf is located on the west coast of Greece, just south of Athens. To get there by car, take the National Highway from Athens to Megara (about 45 minutes), and then follow the signs to the gulf. The drive takes about an hour in total.
Once you arrive in the gulf, there are a few different beaches to choose from. If you’re looking for a quiet place to relax, we recommend the beach at Kalogria. For something a little more lively, try Psatha Beach.

Where to stay

There are a few different options for accommodation in Megara. The most popular option is to stay in one of the large hotels near the city centre, such as the Megara Palace Hotel or the Corinthia Megara Resort. However, if you’re looking for something a little more low-key, there are also some smaller guesthouses and bed & breakfasts dotted around the town. Whichever type of accommodation you choose, you’ll be sure to find somewhere comfortable to rest your head after a long day of exploring.

What else is nearby

The archaeological site of Megara Hyblaia is also worth a visit. It was founded by the Greeks in the seventh century BCE and later became an important city for the Romans.

If you’re looking for a beach day, head to Saronikos Gulf. There are plenty of sandy beaches to relax on and crystal-clear waters to swim in. You can also find some great seafood restaurants along the shore.
For those interested in history, the ancient city of Corinth is just a short drive away. The city was once one of the most powerful in Greece and played an important role in both Roman and Greek history.
